Cycling routes in Mallorca: the best rides from Petra

Mallorca is one of Europe's best-known cycling destinations: mild climate, well-kept roads, landscapes that change every few kilometres and a cycling culture you feel as soon as you step off the plane. And Petra, in the centre of the island, is one of the best places to start.

Why ride in Mallorca?

Over 1,250 km of secondary roads, very good tarmac, drivers used to cyclists, mild temperatures almost year-round and huge variety: the flat Pla, the north coast, the Tramuntana climbs, the Llevant villages…

Why start from Petra

Petra is in the geographic centre of Mallorca. That means the north coast is an hour away, the Tramuntana a couple, and every village of the Pla within a pedal stroke. No traffic jams, no need to cross Palma, no heavy traffic.

Tips for riding in Mallorca

  • Start early in summer: from 11am the sun gets strong.
  • Always carry two full bottles: some sections have no villages.
  • Respect narrow roads and ride single file in busy areas.
  • The Pla wind can be strong; plan the return leg with a tailwind.

Best season

The best months are February to May and September to October, with pleasant temperatures and little heat. Summer is fine too, just start early.

Which bike to choose

For almost all these rides, the ideal choice is a road bike. For mixed groups or if you'd rather not suffer on the climbs, an e-bike is perfect. For flat, family rides, a comfortable urban bike works very well.
